Brentonico Ski: Polsa and San Valentino

According to official Brentonico Ski data, the resort comprises 25 km of pistes, 26 runs and 8 lifts. The slopes lie approximately between 1,195 and 1,583 metres: relatively low elevations compared with the major resorts in Trentino, partly offset by snowmaking, which covers much of the skiable area. The generally sunny exposure makes for pleasant winter days, but before setting out it is always advisable to check conditions and whether the connecting lifts and runs are open.

The ski area’s main characteristic is its family-friendly focus. Most of the pistes are blue and red, wide, easy to read and suitable for beginners or for those who want to ski without tackling excessive gradients. Polsa and San Valentino each have a separate beginners’ area, served by three magic carpets, as well as the Polsa Baby Park, snow-play areas and dedicated bob-sleigh and sledging runs.

The Polsa sector offers some of the longest and most scenic runs in the resort. The Polsa and Montagnola pistes alternate open sections with passages through the woods, while Bellavista and Malga Susine offer more accessible routes. More distinctive is Momo, a traditionally styled run that has been kept close to its 1980s configuration and is also known among telemark enthusiasts. La Rosa del Sole adds a more technical descent and provides access to the link with San Valentino.

At San Valentino, the runs are generally quiet, such as Postemon, Vallone and Panoramica, and are particularly suited to intermediate skiers. Those looking for a more demanding descent can tackle the Canalone, characterised by steep sections and changes of rhythm that are also used for race training. The links between the two sectors allow visitors to explore the entire ski area without using a car, when snow cover and operating conditions permit them to remain open.

The main lifts comprise three fixed-grip four-seater chairlifts and a drag lift, in addition to the magic carpets in the beginners’ areas. This is a functional system suited to the size of the resort, although it is neither particularly fast nor modern. The relative proximity of the pistes to the car parks, accommodation, rental shops and restaurants makes organising the day easy, especially for families with children.

The location is one of Polsa-San Valentino’s strengths: the ski area is about 25 km from Rovereto and is easily reached from the Brenner motorway. It is therefore also a suitable destination for a day on the snow or a weekend break for visitors arriving from southern Trentino, Veneto and the Lombard plain. The setting is compact and less spread out than the large Dolomite ski circuits, with an informal atmosphere and services concentrated near the lift bases.

The plateau’s winter offering also includes cross-country skiing in San Giacomo, at the foot of Monte Altissimo. The centre has a 2.5 km beginners’ loop and several routes, including the 8 km Baronessa Salvotti competition course, homologated by FISI; on some days, the illuminated course is also opened in the evening. Snowshoeing, winter walks, sledging and skating complete the options for those who do not practise alpine skiing.

In summer, Monte Baldo reveals its most distinctive character. Known as the “Garden of Europe” for the richness of its flora, it offers numerous trails for hikers and families, routes towards Monte Altissimo, mountain-bike and e-bike itineraries, and walks through meadows and mountain huts with panoramic viewpoints over Lake Garda. The Monte Baldo Local Nature Park, the Family Adventure Park and the roads popular with cycling enthusiasts make Brentonico an active destination outside the ski season as well.
