Here it is, the squadron as increasingly awaited for major events. Austria for Cortina 2021 is done, after a “troubled” day as the news of Katharina Truppe's injury in training has changed the tables again.
24 athletes have been chosen, 11 women and 13 men, for the world championship starting next Monday with the women's alpine combined: the first world champion event of the post Marcel Hirscher era (who only missed the 2011 World Championship in Garmisch-Partenkirchen ), the most successful skier in the history of the world championships, but also many ambitions for the Wunderteam, and it could not be otherwise despite a season yes with six wins at the men's level (2 Kriechmayr, 2 Schwarz, 1 Mayer and 1 Feller), but even dry at the women's level, which has never happened in the history of the World Cup even if the girls will have time until the finals in Lenzerheide to make up for it.
A team, the home squad Austria, hit by many injuries, starting from the very serious ones of Schmidhofer and Ortlieb, up to the latest problems of Haaser and Troops. "The target? I say 6 to 8 medals ”, the words of Peter Schroecksnadel, the number 1 of the OESV for thirty years.
The women's team will therefore count on Stephanie Venier, Ramona Siebenhofer, Christine Scheyer, Tamara Tippler, Mirjam Puchner and Ariane Raedler in the fast disciplines. Katharina Liensberger will be the reference for the technical disciplines, starting among the very favorites in slalom, with Stephanie Brunner, Kathariba Huber, Franziska Gritsch and Chiara Mair who will act between parallels, giant and slalom (with Gritsch expected in combined).
The men's sector has much more certainty: Matthias Mayer and Vincent Kriechmayr will aim for the big target between downhill and super-g, where we will also see Max Franz, Otmar Striedinger, Daniel Hemetsberger and Christian Walder alternating.
Marco Schwarz will go on the hunt for more medals, starting from the combined, certainly flanked in slalom by Manuel Feller and Michael Matt, with Fabio Gstrein and Adrian Pertl who should also have chances in parallel. Finally, the most difficult specialty for Austria in the last two years, the giant for which Roland Leitinger and Stefan Brennsteiner have been called up.
